Amateur Radio Class

Event Phone: Roger Runnels (713) 254-6615

The Technician class license is the entry-level license of choice for most new ham radio operators.  To earn the Technician license requires passing one examination totaling 35 questions on radio theory, regulations and operating practices.

The  course is completed in 8 two-hour sessions on-line via Zoom.  There is a final session for review and taking the FCC examination (must be in-person).  The class will set the schedule around holidays.

You must have the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual 6th Edition book to complete the course.  Only one required per household.  You may purchase the book from the ARRL or through other resources.  There is a minimal fee ($15 check or cash paid to the FCC-authorized examiners, not to the Squadron) for the examination, as required by the FCC.

Topics covered include:

  • Radio and Signals Fundamentals
  • Electricity, Components, and Circuits
  • Propagation, Antennas, and Feed Lines
  • Amateur Radio Equipment
  • Communicating with Other Hams
  • Licensing Regulations
  • Operating Regulations
  • Safety
  • Question Pool – Review

The examination day will also be open to currently licensed amateur radio operators who seek to upgrade their license.  You do not need to register for that option, but please contact the Squadron Radio Technical Officer (uspssrtohouston@gmail.com) if you want to test for an upgraded license.  The examination date may change depending on availability of the examiners.
