General Safety Considerations for your Vessel and Boating Activities
Join Mr. Chris Leavitt, past Commander of the Houston Power Squadron and former Sea Scout Skipper, and a coastal and blue-water sailor as he and Richard Lipham, Houston Squadron member and Skipper of Sea Scout Ship 846 as they discuss safety; knowledge and best practices.
Chris and Richard will talk with you about customizing a vessel safety checklist based on the equipment required by law, for your boat, and the importance of having an independent Vessel Safety Check by the Houston Squadron. They will also talk about fire prevention, fire extinguishers, fire safety inspections, and how to learn the skills of firefighting on your vessel. Two additional topics: the importance of appropriate levels of First Aid training and preparing for heavy weather when dangerous weather approaches or when limited visibility is encountered.
Included in the discussion with participants are why you have, and how to use, a station bill for your vessel and how planning and practicing for: man overboard, fire, and abandon ship are important. Part of the safety equipment is a radio and how to initiate proper radio communications and use various signaling devices. And finally, a short discussion on hurricane preparedness.
Everyone will enjoy this conversation with Chris and Richard! It will be fun – informative – lively – and from an excellent source of knowledge. This Conversation is Free to everyone.
