This class covers the Navigation Course.  It will be taught as a self-study and/or in small groups; in person or via teleconference; however, there are in-person activities that a student should attend.  The first dates are instruction, followed by an overall review, and completion of the examination and  review of the sight folders.  The schedule will be adjusted and finalized with the students, instructors and mentors; to include review of work and time for field trips for sightings.

Prior to taking this course, the student must have successfully passed the Marine Navigation, Advanced Marine Navigation and Junior Navigation courses.

Books and Materials
It is assumed that the student will have the chart plotting instruments from previous courses. The Squadron has materails to loan, if necessary.  The Squadron has sextants and star charts for use during the course.  Books are purchased by the students from the National Ship’s Store.  Click this link to purchase the Navigation book.  One book per student or household.

There are two exam elements for the course, the Sight Folder and an Open Book Exam.  Both are graded by the Offshore Navigation Committee. There is no set order for completion of the Sight Folder and Exam.

Upon completion of this course, the Squadron Education Officer will work with each student to determine the courses and seminars completed, or needed, to advance to the Grade of Senior Navigator and will also confer with the Squadron manager of the Boat Operator Certification process to determine a students status and what level of certification is available to them.
