Standup Paddle Board
Course Description
America’s Boating Club Houston offers this short, 3-hour course to introduce the fun of paddle sports with a standup paddleboard (SUP). The Introduction to SUP course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry level individuals.
The course covers the ACA-Level 1 basic skills of paddle boarding on flat, calm water, protected from wind, waves and boat traffic, with little-to-no current, and within swimming distance of shore. It covers entering the SUP to exiting the SUP and all the paddling in-between; including skills such as lifting and carrying, launching, paddling techniques, turning, steering, and landing. Included is a demonstration of a Vessel Safety Check. Yes, it’s a lot of fun.
The land-based part of the course covers elements in the following topics:
- Preparing to Depart and Return
- Maneuvers
- Technical Knowledge
- Basic Safety and Rescue
What to Wear
Please wear clothing that will offer protection from the sun. Also, you will get wet. So, clothing should be appropriate. Proper footwear is also very important. Closed-toe water shoes or athletic shoes are required. Please remember that your footwear will get wet.
What to Bring
Plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen. We encourage an extra set of clothing for after the class.
What We Provide
We will provide your life jacket equipped with the required safety equipment. We do not provide the SUP or paddle. You may bring your own SUP or rent at the training location. You are more than welcome to use / bring your own SUP, life jacket and paddle. However, cost of course is still the same.
